5 Ingredients You Want in Your Skin Care, and 5 You Don’t! | Skin Actives

Posted by Dr. Hannah Sivak and Brendan Leonard on Mar 5th 2020

The process of reading labels has been with us for a long time now.

Maybe there have been times in your life when you are more active about it than others. Sometimes it just depends on where we are at, what’s going on around us. We suspect that as part of the Skin Actives family you are already label conscious. That makes a lot of sense, because so are we.

At the core of Skin Actives mission has always been creating the world’s finest products, chock full of ingredients at levels that are both proven to work and won’t be harmful to your skin health. We’re also dedicated to educating you so that you can make the very best choices for every skin concern.

So, below, we have a list of five top ingredients and why use them in our range of Skin Actives products, followed by a list of products we don’t use and why you should avoid them.

Say an Enthusiastic “YES!” to These:

  1. Vitamin A - At Skin Actives we are in love with Vitamin A, especially in the form of retinyl acetate. Retinyl acetate works in your skin to stimulate the processes that keep things plump and fresh, as well as diminishing fine lines and wrinkles. This is one to reach for.
  2. Epidermal Growth Factor - Or, as we like to call it, EGF is a protein that occurs naturally in your body. As you age, your body’s ability to make this important protein declines, so we make sure that it’s in our top shelf products to help with the overall tone and texture of your skin, while simultaneously fighting wrinkles.
  3. Apocynin - With it’s long history of folk use to back up numerous scientific papers over decades, Apocynin is our “go-to” to combat oxidative stress and anti-inflammatory properties. Apocynin is the backbone of our highly rated Advanced Ageless line of products.
  4. ROS BioNet - You won’t find this one anywhere else! ROS BioNet™ is Skin Actives Scientific’s trademarked blend of proteins formulated to deactivate Reactive Oxygen Species. It’s designed to prevent damage to your skin’s lipids and proteins which can be a big cause of aging.
  5. Vitamin E - This is the primary, lipid-soluble antioxidant utilized by your skin. As Reactive Oxygen Species are trying to disrupt your cell membranes, Vitamin E works against them. The natural form of Vitamin E is called Tocopherols and you’ll find them in our top-rated Anti-Aging cream.

Say "No Way!” to:

  1. Abrasives - Maybe you’ve had to sand down a wall as part of a home improvement project? Products that include harsh abrasives want us to approach our skin in the same way. But your skin is a living organ, not a wall, and you won’t make it any smoother trying to sand it down.
  2. Benzoyl Peroxide - Benzoyl Peroxide is a harsh chemical that has dozens of industrial applications outside of skin care. What you need to know about it is that it is a huge source of Reactive Oxygen Species and as such it will dry, irritate and damage your skin.
  3. Concentrated Essential Oils - Your local natural grocer has probably invested a lot of time selling you on essential oils as natural cures and perfumes. As nice as they may smell, Essential oils concentrated heavily can be harmful to your skin. Have you ever noticed how they are only sold in glass? That’s because concentrated essential oils can also be strong solvents, warping and eating through plastic. Now imagine that on your skin!
  4. Fragrances - Everyone likes it when things smell nice. We don’t think anyone goes out of their way to make things smell bad! But the thing about fragrances is that they have a lot of allergens in them, and they can cause allergic reactions in a lot of people. It’s really not worth the risk. So we don’t use fragrances in our products at Skin Actives, so you’ll never have to worry about that.
  5. Alcohol - This is very similar to Benzoyl Peroxide. Alcohol has its practical uses, there is no denying it. But it also dries out and ages your skin. The stinging sensation of alcohol does not mean that it’s working. You can find other ingredients that will take care of your skin, you don’t need alcohol.
