What IS a base cream? If you are new to Skin Actives you might not be familiar with the term. 

Actually, it is an idea that goes all the way back to Skin Actives Scientific’s roots, when we mainly sold actives for DIY projects.

Creams, as a generality,  are mixtures of oil and water, two things have sort of a reputation for not going well together. But through the magic of chemistry, we can balance the oils and water to form a cream. What that means however is that adding in water based elements or oil based elements can throw off this mixture and cause a cream to destabilize and separate back into its component parts.

A base cream is a cream formulated with the specific intent of having active ingredients blended into it and disrupting that careful balance. This is a pretty common idea in DIY circles, but isn’t really heard of much outside of that community. 

Well, it’s been a long, crazy adventure and now DIY is only part of the way Skin Actives seeks to continually address your daily challenges and empower you to become your own skin health expert! And true to our DIY roots, the Skin Actives base creams are still available for you to purchase for DIY experimentation, or just as a nice, unscented cream, to help you with your daily concerns.

Moisturizing Base Creams for DIY Skincare Products

At Skin Actives we have four great bases. Nearly every single one of our own creams uses one of these as the base. So you may be using them already!

Canvas Base Cream - The Original! Canvas base cream is the foundation upon which we’ve built our brand for over ten years! It’s a great lightweight moisturizer that absorbs easily into the skin. Canvas Base Cream is for normal to oily skin types, which is why you will find it at the core of many of our most successful products.

European Base Cream - Our European Base Cream followed quickly on the heels of the original. It’s a richer formulation with a silky texture people love. We find that European Cream addresses issues for those with mature or dry skin very well!

Body Lotion - Our customers wanted an option for a lotion that they could use all over, not just their face and hands. Our answer was our Body Lotion! Great for formulations you want to create for your arms and legs, but also perfect for all skin types!

Sea Kelp - Okay, well by our definition it’s not really a “base” but we do use our awesome Sea Kelp Coral as the foundation for a whole host of your favorite gels and serums! It’s also a great place for you to get nutrient dense, soothing relief. Sea Kelp Coral is perfect for damaged skin. Put it on after a treatment or a sunburn to feed your angry skin the nutrients it deserves!

Pro Tip: Skin Actives Base Creams are good year round, but if you are using one or another, we suggest rotating them for maximum effectiveness as the seasons change. Right now the Northern Hemisphere is moving into its colder, dryer months. If you have been using Canvas Base Cream, now would be a perfect time to transition into European Cream!
