2021 Skincare Trend Alert: Growth Factors | Skin Actives
Posted by Brendan Leonard on Feb 5th 2021
What’s the hottest thing in skincare right now? Possibly growth factors.
Specifically, we’re talking about Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) and Keratinocyte Growth Factor (KGF). You may have become accustomed to seeing these acronyms on the bottles and jars of your favorite brands.
Well, we hope so anyway, because Skin Actives Scientific uses both these great actives and has been for years. Way back in the early days of Skin Actives when there were just four employees (and two of them were our founders Jonatan Fuctowicz and Dr. Hannah Sivak), we took pride in getting the cutting edge power of EGF and KGF to customers all over the world at prices that normal people could afford.
Now there is a lot more awareness about these great products. But what do growth factors do, and what makes them desirable?
Growth Factors in Skincare
Epidermal Growth Factor and Keratinocyte Growth Factor occur naturally in your body. They are components of your skin, components of the cells that make up your skin really, and they instruct your cells how to behave.
Epidermal Growth Factor tells the cells of your skin to reproduce. Keep in mind that this does not mean that EGF reproduces cells. Instead, it sends a signal to the cells in your body to begin that vital work.
Keratinocyte Growth Factor is a little different. KGF communicates that same “start growing” message to the cells in your body that have the capacity to produce hair. Some skin cells are able to produce hair follicles, others are not. In those that can produce them, KGF essentially turns hair production “on”.
Why Do I Need Growth Factors in My Hair Products?
Well, as we age our body’s ability to produce these factors reduces, like many of the chemical stores in your body. As time takes its toll, your body essentially begins to “turn off” systems that it deems less than vital. This means that EGF decreases and KGF decreases along with it.
But never fear, the receptors that exist inside your cells to hear the messages sent by growth factors are still there, ready to receive them. All you have to do is apply tiny amounts of growth factors topically, and your body will begin putting cells to work that have been dormant in this capacity for years.
In our clients, Skin Actives has seen absolutely outrageous results in the realms of diminishing wrinkles (EGF) and improving hair growth (KGF). Now, these results don’t come overnight. And they only work if the actives can get in touch with the porous membrane of your skin! This is pretty easy if you are using EGF to kickstart skin renewal on your hands, arms and face, but when you are getting KGF onto your scalp to help your hair, it has to go all the way down to the scalp to make a difference.
Skin Actives uses both these ingredients in some of our favorite products. Check them out!
