Revolutionizing DIY Personalized Skincare with Skin Actives' Newest Products

Posted by Mack Leonard on Sep 27th 2022

For over a decade, countless customers have relied on Skin Actives’ broad selection of convenient, high-quality DIY ingredients—along with our handy base creams and gels—to craft ingenious DIY skin care recipes. These recipes have been shared, iterated on, and in some cases even used as inspiration for products enjoyed by hundreds or thousands of skin care users. But most importantly, they worked for you—helping customers with specific needs or concerns achieve their skin care goals.

Today, we are thrilled to take our commitment to DIY a step further. To empower DIY creators more than ever, we are launching two revolutionary new products: Base Serum and Base Toner Spray. Available for the first time anywhere in the world, Base Serum and Base Toner Spray expand the possibilities of DIY beyond creams and gels. It’s never been easier to customize your skin care to your needs. Let’s find out how.

Convenience and Flexibility for DIY Recipes

By offering a wide array of high quality, pre-measured skin care ingredients and bases, Skin Actives has always sought to demystify skin care and enable everyday skin care users to develop solutions that work for them. But there was a significant limitation: while our collection of ingredients presented DIY creators with many choices for their recipes, the options for base substances were comparatively restrictive.

Over time, as serums and sprays gained traction in the skin care market, the conventional framework of mixing actives into base creams and gels seemed insufficient. It did not escape our notice that many creators were taking DIY actives and adding them to other serums and sprays. We decided to throw the full weight of our formulating expertise behind this practice and create a serum and spray that lend themselves to DIY experimentation with maximum convenience.

We took care to match these new bases to our existing DIY collection. Many of our DIY actives are sold in the correct volume for a four ounce mixture, so we’re introducing Base Serum and Base Toner Spray in four ounce containers as well. That means one tube of an active purchased from our web store should be the right amount for a recipe using the new bases. This drag-and-drop convenience is a worldwide first in DIY skin care, even more so when applied to serums and sprays.

Enhanced Hydration with Base Serum

While most of our DIY actives work well when added to other serums, problems could arise when the serum was not designed to support powders or could only support one at a time, limiting the customizability of the recipe. To overcome this issue, we formulated Base Serum with plenty of actives that help powders dissolve.

To streamline the experience more, we choose actives that benefit the skin aside from helping the texture of the serum. Base Serum features hyaluronic acid and tremella, two of nature’s most powerful hydration factors. (Perhaps unsurprisingly for those who have tried our Hydrating and Firming Age-Defying Cream with tremella, Base Serum serves as a pleasing moisturizer all on its own.) The result is a lightweight serum that hydrates the skin while supporting the addition of up to three water-soluble actives. That’s far greater flexibility than DIY creators ever had with serums before.

Soothing Nourishment with Base Toner Spray

Even rarer in the DIY community is the custom spray. For too long, skin care users have been forced to rely on big name retailers to provide them with skin care solutions in convenient sprays. We’re breaking open new possibilities by introducing a customizable version of skin care’s most refreshing and mobile-ready form.

Packaged in a slender bottle with a spray top, Base Toner Spray harnesses rose water and neroli water to deliver a cooling spritz that can support up to three water-soluble actives. Sea Kelp Bioferment and Witch Hazel round out the mixture, contributing a calming effect well suited to the format. Base Toner Spray is an excellent choice for DIY toners or soothing sprays. Don’t be fooled by the appealing scent: Base Toner Spray does not include artificial fragrances or other known irritants.

Limitless DIY Possibilities

Given how many high-quality actives are available in our DIY collection, the number of possible DIY recipes using our cream and gel bases was already astronomical. With the addition of Base Serum and Base Toner Spray, the scope of potential recipes is even greater. We put together a few of our own to demonstrate the possibilities. Keep in mind, one tube of each active should be the right amount, except where otherwise noted.

3 DIY Skincare Serum Recipes

Here are a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing. Remember to sterilize the area when working mixing your formulations and have fun!

Peptide Serum:

Base Serum + Palmitoyl Pentapeptide + HA Gel

Centella and Boswellia Serum:

Base Serum + Centella Asiatica + Boswellia Extract (1/2 Tube)

DePuff Serum:

Base Serum + DePuff Concentrate

3 DIY Facial Spray Recipes

We spent some time experimenting in the lab to come up with some new spray recipes.  We know a lot of our customers who add EGF to rose water, but here are some other ideas for you to try.  Make sure you mix the actives slowly and thoroughly to prevent lumps from clogging the spray bottle. You may want to try a small hand mixer for better results.

Soothing Spray:

Base Toner Spray + 1/2 tube Aloe Vera Extract + 1/2 tube Beta Glucan Oat + 4 tsp. Sea Kelp Coral (Note: add alow in small increments, recommended to use a hand mixer)

Tightening Toner:

Base Toner Spray + 1/2 tube DMAE + 1/4 tube GABA + 1/2 tube Tremella Gel

Amino Acid Spray:

Base Toner Spray + Amino Acid Booster + Mitochondria Concentrate

Important DIY Note: Because Base Serum and Base Toner Spray use water-based formulas to enhance solubility, it is advisable to keep the pH of your DIY creations within recommended ranges. This can be done with inexpensive pH test strips available online. For Base Serum, we recommend a pH of 3 to 6. For Base Toner Spray, a pH of 3 to 7 will work best.

Personal and Economical Skin Care

By launching Base Serum and Base Toner Spray, we are thrilled to make skin care more personal than ever. Sensitivities to certain ingredients or preferences for others need no longer discourage skin users: there is a DIY creation for everyone.

Aside from DIY allowing skin care users to tailor products to their needs, we believe it should provide more affordable products than big name retail alternatives. That’s why we’re launching Base Serum and Base Toner Spray at uniquely accessible prices—so the total cost of bases and actives for a given recipe remains a savings.

Most of all, we’re excited to see how our customers use this expanded DIY toolkit. The clever ways Skin Actives DIY creators build new products and routines never ceases to amaze us. If you’ve struck gold with a DIY recipe, consider sharing it on our Facebook Group, the review section of our website, or even on TikTok—there may be someone else out there looking for the exact recipe you have invented.
