The Ultimate Guide To Double Cleansing
Posted by Savannah Katz on Mar 12th 2024
Over the past couple years double cleansing has been a hot topic and a holy grail for clear skin. From K-Beauty enthusiasts to skincare novices, the concept of cleansing your face not once, but twice, has sparked both intrigue and skepticism. Some may wonder, what exactly is double cleansing, and is it worth incorporating into your skincare routine? Let’s delve into the idea of double cleansing, its benefits, and whether it's the skincare secret you've been missing.
Why Choose Double Cleansing?
Double cleansing comes to us from Korean skincare. Korean skincare routines have been dominating social media and trends since around 2017 with their elaborate, multi-step procedures. The main premise behind double cleansing is very simple: cleanse twice, first with an oil-based cleanser and followed immediately with a water-based cleanser. If you are wondering, shouldn’t one round of cleansing do the trick? Well, yes, but also, maybe not.
The logic behind double cleansing method goes like this: The first cleanse with the oil-based product cuts through make-up, SPF products, and sebum. The oils also “pull” oil build-up that may be occurring in your pores that could potentially lead to acne blemishes or blackheads. This first cleanse should clear the stuff that you probably think about most when you think about cleansing, for instance: dirt, make-up and dead skin cells. The second cleanse is then performed with a water-based cleanser. This step is meant to deep cleanse, focusing on clearing impurities from deep within your skin, while simultaneously preparing your skin to receive other serums and creams.Â
Double Cleansing And Its Benefits
The benefits of double cleansing include:
- Double cleansing ensures the removal of makeup, sunscreen, dirt, and excess oil from the skin, providing a deeper cleanse than a single cleanser alone.
- The first step of double cleansing with an oil-based cleanser helps to dissolve and lift impurities from the pores, reducing the risk of congestion and breakouts.
- By thoroughly cleansing the skin, double cleansing helps to remove barriers such as makeup and sunscreen, allowing skincare products to penetrate more effectively and deliver their active ingredients.
- Regular double cleansing can lead to clearer, brighter skin by removing built-up impurities and promoting cell turnover.
- Double cleansing can be customized to suit different skin types and concerns, from oily and acne-prone to dry and sensitive skin.
Incorporating double cleansing into your skincare routine can lead to cleaner, healthier-looking skin with improved texture and radiance.

How To Double Cleanse
- Begin with Skin Actives’ Skin Cleansing Oil
- Start by applying a small amount of the oil-based cleanser to dry skin. Gently massage the cleanser in circular motions, focusing on areas with makeup and sunscreen buildup.Â
- Emulsify and rinse
- Add a splash of lukewarm water to emulsify the oil cleanser, turning it into a milky consistency. Continue massaging the cleanser into your skin, ensuring all traces of makeup and dirt are lifted away. Finally, rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, patting your face dry with a clean towel.
- Follow up with one of Skin Actives’ cleansers
- Next, dispense a pea-sized amount of your chosen cleanser onto damp hands. Gently massage the cleanser onto your skin allowing it to work its magic for at least a minute before rinsing thoroughly with lukewarm water.
- Pat dry and follow with your skincare routine
In the end, the decision to double cleanse or single cleanse will be largely personal. Know your skin, and know yourself. Don’t feel pressure to give in to trends and don’t overdo it. Educating yourself and knowing your limits will yield the ultimate goal: skin health!Â
