What are Lipids and Why Does Our Skin Love Them?

What Are Lipids?

We’ve been talking about lipids a lot recently, we’ve maybe been kind of obsessed with them. The more common name for lipids is fats. You might be inclined to think of fats as something to avoid, but lipids are not only unavoidable but also crucial for life.

Numerous lipids are crucial parts of the membranes of cells. They are even partly responsible for keeping our cell membranes permeable; allowing some stuff to come in, keeping other stuff out and allowing some chemicals to move in and out as required by the cell to continue living.

From a skin care perspective, today the lipids we’re specifically concerned with express themselves as oils. We require lipids, including essential fatty acids, for our cells to function properly. But as we’ve stated in previous blogs, we lost our ability to produce some of these enzymes ourselves over the course of evolution. For example: our bodies aren’t capable of converting oleic acid into the fatty acids that are absolutely essential for development.

Every Lipid Serum is one of our key products.

Every Lipid Serum (ELS) is essential for all skin types, especially those with dry skin, to soothe and moisturize. It will also help address rough patches of skin affected by psoriasis. This serum contains the lipids all skin needs to maintain a healthy barrier against the environment. The objective of this every lipid serum (not literally every lipid, but close enough) is to provide an array of nutrients and antioxidants that your skin needs to stay healthy. You can address these concerns by simply applying ELS directly to your skin and massaging it in gently.

So what else can you use Every Lipid Serum for? Almost anything!

Here are some of our favorite uses:

  • Add to Body Lotion - For some additional moisturizing action, mix ELS in a simple body lotion that you prefer. ELS was formulated for mixing so just add it in to preference.
  • Add to Shower Gel - The dryness of the air can really be a bummer for your skin during the winter months. Attack dry skin all over by mixing some Every Lipid Serum into your shower gel. You’re going to want to shake the mixture well before use to make sure that the ELS is distributed throughout.
  • Premix w/ a Water Based Serum - Our Collagen Serum is a perfect example of a water based serum that you are going to use all over your face every day, maybe even twice! You can totally squirt a little bit of ELS into your water based serum to give it a little extra kick. Oil and water will separate though, so like your shower gel, you’re going to want to shake this vigorously before use.
  • Final Layer of Your Skincare Routine - When your skin routine is set for the day, apply a thin layer of ELS to create a dewy, glowing shine! Keep in mind that this is going to be one of those less-is-more scenarios. Dispense a small amount into your palm, see if you can get like, half a pump, and rub your palms together until you see a nice sheen. Then apply gently to your face.
  • A Solid Formulation Base - Have you tried using ELS as a jumping off point for your own formulations? If you’ve been thinking about getting involved in DIY, Every Lipid Serum is an easy place to start. Pick up a 4 oz ELS, a Coenyzme Q10 and a Retinyl Acetate. You can mix the two actives into the ELS, right in the bottle by shaking vigorously. Now you’ve got an ELS with even more power. Give it a try!
